Training an 8 year old horse.
Hi Franklin,
I have a well-muscled quarter horse gelding named Red. We told that he was four years old and recently when checking his breeding, discovered he is eight or nine. In the last two years he has learned barn manners and leads, picks up feet, etc. Very nicely. We are about the begin the bit, bridle and saddle lunging but have been told you cannot break a horse that is over eight years old. Why would this be? He is quiet and learning quickly, he also seems eager. What are the concerns with older horses? Why would some trainers say it can't be done?
Sue
Hi Sue,
Acutally I think whoever told you you cannot train a horse older than eight years doesn't know much about horses. They may know how to ride, but not very much about horses. That is a myth. I have 'started' many older horses and they do fine. Particular challenges they may have depends on the 'baggage' they bring with them. That may take some time to undo. Older horses are very habituated to their lives and big changes can be difficult, but certainly not impossible. It really depends on the horse. Younger horses tend to be easier to deal with as they do not have the possiblity of so much abuse in their in past history. Sounds like this is a nice horse. I would continue to go slow and be very sensitive. Do not proceed to the next step until the previous one has been mastered by you both. Take things one step at a time, be patient, be precise, say 'thank you' for any try the horse does to comply with requests. Build your relationship during the training by developing trust as the bottom line. Keep me posted.....
Sincerely, Franklin
Thank you so much for replying. I was quite shocked to hear back! Knowing that you are very busy. This is exactly what the trainer I am working with wanted to hear, (she has 30 years experience and is from Australia). That it was a myth. She felt Red was coming along fine, but this myth circulates and did have her concerned. I will keep you posted. Here is a photo of Red as he is now...the next photo will be of me mounted in the saddle! You have given me the focus I need, on trust.
Thank you for your great advice, kind words and taking the time!
